There was something special about walking down the aisle and seeing the faces of all these people who have loved and supported us. As lucky as we are to come from more diverse and open-minded communities, we are still a long way from living in a world where two women can get married with no fear of judgment. And to see this whole crowd of people (and even more on Zoom) show up to support our union was a moment of healing.

Any vendor(s) you'd like to rave about?
Fruitvale Designs! Our coordinator was involved in almost every step of the preparation process and was present for the entire wedding day. We had video calls every few weeks in the months leading up to the wedding to discuss our to-do lists and progress. On the day of the wedding, she oversaw the setup of decorations, distributed tasks among volunteers, and was the contact person for any questions.
Any memorable moments from your reception?
In the world of weddings, you might say that ours was pretty standard, without too much that set it apart from others. We had the traditional toasts from family and friends, the traditional dances and cake cutting. But for us, after a year of being separated from our loved ones during a pandemic, it meant the world to just be able to gather together and enjoy each others company during a happy occasion. And in case anyone is wondering, we did make sure attendees were vaccinated/tested beforehand.
What was the best part of your day?
Jess: The best part of my day was the anticipation of seeing Jenni for our first look and then being back to back with her until we were told to turn around. It was such an amazing moment.
Jenni: Not to piggyback on Jess’ answer, but the first look was actually the part that surprised me the most. I knew Jess would look beautiful, so I figured the first look would just be an obligatory photo opportunity. And yet I couldn’t believe how gorgeous she looked when I saw her.
Aside from that, there was something special about walking down the aisle and seeing the faces of all these people who have loved and supported us. As lucky as we are to come from more diverse and open-minded communities, we are still a long way from living in a world where two women can get married with no fear of judgment. And to see this whole crowd of people (and even more on Zoom) show up to support our union was a moment of healing.
What was your favorite detail from your wedding day?
It’s hard not to focus on the aesthetics of our wedding. Having handed over the design control to Fruitvale Designs, we didn’t really know what to expect, so to this day we are still in awe when we look at the photos!
Advice from the Couple
Always expect to pay more than you plan. It’s an expensive party to throw, and there’s really no getting around it. But in the end, you don’t remember the payments, you remember the beauty and the happiness.
What would you have done differently if you had the chance?
Other than hiring a professional photo booth, it’s hard to say we would have done anything differently. Sure, it was a lot of hard work to do things ourselves, but it’s so fulfilling to see the end result of your hard work!
