While the “love at first sight” story is a fun one to read about or watch in a movie, in real life, a love that is given time to grow is often the longest lasting. When Rose met Jason, she initially declined his invitations to spend time together, but as time went on, she realized they had more in common than she initially thought. “It was through the love of delicious food and the introduction to restaurants serving creative and eclectic dishes that I accepted his courtship,” Rose explains.

On a romantic trip to Seattle, the couple did what they enjoy most: eating (this time through Pike Place Market and at local hot spots). On the last night of their vacation, Jason surprised Rose with reservations for a private dinner overlooking the city. It was there, in the intimate setting, that Jason proposed.

During their year-long engagement, both Rose and Jason were involved in various aspects of the wedding planing, but they invited their families to choose their wedding date. Rose explains, “In Chinese/Vietnamese culture, it is important and considered ‘good luck’ to select an auspicious date through the use of a Chinese calendar to ensure a successful marriage.”

Though their classically Gatsby-inspired wedding—designed by Nikki T Design.Decor—had more than 500 guests, they kept the focus on family, friends and food. In their wedding design and décor, they aimed to mix the traditions of both of their cultural backgrounds along with their individual stylistic vision. “It was important to keep the ongoing old traditions out of respect for their heritage,” Rose says. To honor her heritage, she wore a traditional red Vietnamese dress for their tea ceremony. Later, for the reception, the bridesmaids wore black gowns and the groomsmen wore black and white tuxes, bringing in their own personal style. “It was a compromise and the family was very understanding.”

A highlight of the ceremony for both Rose and Jason was a traditional element that brings joy and excitement to the newlywed couple as well as their families. Rose explains, “Following the tea ceremony, the groom takes the bride to his bedroom along with all young children. They all then sit on the bed to bring fertility to the newlywed.” She adds, “It must have worked, because I am now pregnant!”

The couple loved every moment of their wedding, making it impossible to choose just one detail they found most memorable. Yet, Rose has a sound bit of advice for soon-to-be newlyweds: “It is important to savor each moment with each other and your friends and family.  You cannot control everything. Things are bound to go wrong because it’s a large event. Sit back, relax and have Champagne!”
