Sarah and Greg met at work and began dating a year later. It didn’t take them long to realize this was it.

“Our courtship was very quick—we knew we were right for each other from the beginning,” she says. After about a year and a half of dating, Greg proposed to Sarah at a Garth Brooks concert, during the song “Shameless”—the song they would eventually have their first dance to.

The couple jumped right into wedding planning. “The hardest part about planning was the time frame we were trying to work within,” she says. “Greg and I wanted to get married in the summer, but didn’t want to wait over a year.” Since they both have joint custody of their children, they needed to plan a day when they could get everyone together as well.

After setting the date, finding the venue was much easier.

“We had gone to an event at the Blue Goose before and [knew] if we ever decided to get married we would want to host it there,” she says. The quick turnaround added some extra stress, but it was a thrill the couple loved. “We really didn’t have any low points while planning the wedding—we were so happy to get married that the entire process was joyful from beginning to end,” she says.

Through the details and ambiance, the couple made sure the wedding would reflect their relationship and personalities.

“We really wanted our wedding to be laid-back, relaxed and comfortable for us and our guests, nothing too fancy,” she says. “I think our wedding turned out better than we wanted. I was blown away when I saw all our hard work and planning come together.”

The bride was also eager to take on as many DIY projects as she could and found help and support from those closest to her. “Almost everything used for our wedding was homemade,” she says. “I enjoyed working with my mother-in-law [to make] decorations and put everything together. It created a bond between us.”

As for traditions, well, the couple felt they were made to be broken. “I think we broke more traditions than we followed,” she says. “Our kids walked us down the aisle, we didn’t have a bouquet or garter toss, and we saw each other before the wedding. Neither one of us are very traditional people, and I think that was definitely reflected in our wedding.”

Soon after, the two were celebrating their wedded bliss on a Mediterranean cruise that took them to Italy, Serbia, Croatia and Greece; then, they flew to Paris to go to Euro Disney.
