We love beautiful styled shoots, but when they have a deeper meaning they’re even more special. Recently a group of local wedding professionals created a breathtaking styled shoot paying homage to Native American Culture. The idea was spearheaded by Kaboo from KABOO Photography. When we asked her about the inspiration for the shoot, she said, “As a Hmong individual deeply connected to my own rich traditions, I’ve always appreciated the beauty and significance of cultural rituals and significances. This personal connection inspired me to create a wedding style photo shoot blending two distinct traditions, modern American wedding aesthetics and the sacred traditions of Native American culture.
My admiration for Native American culture grew after attending local powwows, where I was spiritually captivated by the vibrant songs, dances, and intricate cultural attire. I felt a strong and emotional connection and with these experiences, sparked a vision to honor and celebrate this incredible heritage through my photography.
It became a reality when Michelle at Solo in Winters, CA, approached me with an opportunity to collaborate with her jewelry line. She connected me with Britanee, a model of Native descent, and Sky, a talented Native singer and officiant. Their guidance was invaluable, providing insights and connections that allowed me to respectfully feature elements of Native American wedding traditions and wear.
While I understand that ceremonial rituals vary across tribes and regions, I approached this project with deep respect and a desire to authentically showcase the beauty and spirituality of Northern California Native American traditions. From the hand-tying ceremony to the smudging ritual and blanket wrapping, this photoshoot represents just a glimpse into the sacred customs of this culture, that an outsider is allowed.
For me, this project was about more than creating stunning imagery, it was about bridging cultures and honoring all traditions with authenticity. It’s a celebration of love, unity, and the beauty of celebrating traditions in a meaningful way.”
We’re delighted to share this inspirational shoot for today’s #StyledShootSunday post—we teased the shoot in our just released Winter/Spring 2025 issue, and here we’re honored share even more of the gorgeousness created by this talented team of local wedding professionals.
