With so much to consider – and budget for – cakes and desserts tend to fall to the bottom of the priority list. What couples often forget, however, is that the cake is often a component of the wedding that draws a lot of attention and can leave a lasting impression on the guests. After all, your guests are eager to use your wedding as an excuse to indulge, so ‘Let them eat cake!’

Brandy West of Go West Baking and Events has tips for making your dessert selection a sweet one.

  • Don’t make your cake an afterthought

Start looking for ideas and add them to your dream board, Pinterest board or wedding binder.  Be sure to share these ideas with your baker, but remember that they are artists, so they will use your images for inspiration, but will never copy another baker’s design.

  • Know your budget

If you find yourself selecting more elaborate designs, you should expect your cake budget to be on the higher end. If your dessert budget is a bit tighter, talk with your baker about other ideas or even a dessert bar.

  • Ask questions

Be sure to ask the right questions to make sure you are hiring the right person for the job. Some questions to consider asking:

*Is your date available? Bakers who are in demand book early. Spring and fall weddings in California book first, so be prepared.

*Is the baker licensed and insured? Many venues require proof of insurance and licensing. This is important and should be asked early on in your discussion.

*Can they deliver to your location? Delivery will impact your budget. Let your baker know early on to where they are delivering, and at what time of day.

*Does the baker offer tastings? This is an important day, you want to be able to experience what you are serving your guests, and be a part of your memories for years to come. There is often a tasting fee assessed, however, that is usually credited back when you book your wedding.

*What type of dessert options are available? If you are looking for a fondant cake versus buttercream, or dessert bar options, let your baker know. You may also want to inquire if that will be a part of your tasting.

*Will you need extras? If you need a cake stand, dessert plates, boxes, flowers (fresh or sugar), fruit, topper, etc., these are typically additional cost items.

*What is required to book? Ask what is in the contract, what deposit is required and payment options.
