Sacramento Wedding Inspiration: Grand Dames {Get to Know Maggie}

Why did you enter this contest?

I entered this contest because the owner of my salon, Alexis, does a lot of photoshoots with Real Weddings Magazine and she was the one that informed me that the magazine only uses real brides and showed me their entry form.

What do you do for a living?

I am a hairstylist. I work about four to five days a week alongside nine other girls at Halo Salon and Day Spa in Roseville.

What do you do for fun?

My free time consists of traveling! My fiancé and I are always traveling at least one weekend out of the month. Our latest trip was to Europe for two weeks! Usually it’s dirt bike related, due to his job, but we have so much fun together whatever we are doing. If we are not traveling, we are usually at the dirt bike track or the lake jet skiing! And if we aren’t at the lake or track, you can find me either shopping online or at the mall or hanging out with our two kitties!

Tell us your love story.

I met Ryan through a mutual friend in Arizona. I was born and raised in Arizona, and him in California. We casually dated for a little and then decided to get serious and really do the long distance relationship, which was very tough. However, we did that for two years while I finished up school, and then we decided it was time for me to make the move to California. From the day I moved we had been thrown so many obstacles. It was hard finding a job and getting established, being away from my family and friends, and being in a whole new state. Then in December 2016, I was diagnosed with liver cancer. And, as if that wasn’t hard enough to deal with, Ryan’s father was diagnosed with brain cancer and unfortunately lost his battle. Again, if we weren’t already trying to grieve the loss of his father, we then lost his two cousins to a drunk driver.

Going through all of this, within less than a year, really gave us perspective on life and just how precious it really is. If we could go through all of the horror and pain and sorrow we went through together and come out on the other side stronger than ever, I think we both knew we were meant for each other in every way possible. That man has stood beside me in the worst time of both of our lives. He never left my side, despite loosing everyone he did.

He proposed to me on my birthday on March 25th, 2018. We were in Indianapolis for a supercross race and it was freezing cold! They just had a blizzard and got over a foot of snow the morning before. We went to breakfast and then decided to go walk around the Sailors and Soldiers Monument, which is a big circle with large fountains that were covered in snow. It was so beautiful! It was a brisk morning, just the two of us, walking around in the snow. He told me he wanted to take a picture of me in front of it so I started walking towards the front and realized I didn’t hear him behind me. I turned around and there he was in the snow, kneeling, asking me to spend forever with him! Honestly, it was so perfect!

Tell us about your wedding day.

Our wedding day will be on March 25th, 2019 in Big Sur, California. We are a bit non-traditional, so the full big wedding day wasn’t really for us. We decided to only invite our immediate family and closest friends. We are hiking and kind of scaling some rocks down by a cliff to have our wedding. It will be a little more on the adventurous side! We are wearing leather jackets and converse and it will be freezing cold and possibly rainy and just everything I could ever want! Our theme is described as this moody bohemian dream. The color pallet is deep blues, greens, oranges and reds. I am most looking forward to marrying my best friend and being surrounded by the rugged cliffs and waves of Big Sur. It just brings this sense of peace and calm for us. We hope our guests will say how unique and romantic this was and just how different it is than your normal wedding, but mostly we just want them to support us and be happy as we join together and become husband and wife.

What did your husband/fiancé think about you entering this contest? What did he say when you became a finalist? What did YOU think when you were selected?

My fiancé was surprised that a bridal magazine wasn’t hiring professional models for a cover shoot, so he was so excited when I was picked as a finalist, and honestly I was so surprised too! I didn’t think I would ever be lucky enough to spend full day at a photoshoot trying on these beautiful gowns!

Tell us about your cover model experience. What was the application/selection process like? What was your favorite part of the day? How did you feel afterwards?

This cover model experience was honestly one of the best days of my life! The application was more of a tell-all about yourself and then I got to meet Wendy and her adorable assistant Emily. We had a quick 10-minute interview/introduction and then I got the call that I was a finalist and told to be there for the shoot! My favorite part of the day was the last dress I got to try on. It was so beautiful and so much fun, and we were outside shooting it and so many people were walking by and commenting and staring and honestly it was just so surreal and exciting! The whole day was magical. Everyone on set that day was amazing and kind and genuine and it was such a blessing to meet and spend the day with all the wonderful people! And after the shoot was over, I just wanted to rewind the day and do it all over again!!
