Makeup by Mandie

Tell us a little about your company?  I started my business in 2010 with bridal as my primary clientele. I have a background in fine art, an understanding of color theory, lighting, and spatial relationships that rival Leonardo Da’Vinci. From there it was easy for me to transition into makeup and I am an expert in making people look and feel beautiful while ensuring the makeup lasts well into the following day (I know you’re all too tired to take it off that night!)

When did you establish your business? I started my business in 2010 after working in cosmetics for over 6 years prior. I realized I could have all the fun of doing makeup with none of the headache that comes with working in retail!
What sets you apart from your competition? I started with a background in fine art, and have had my work in galleries, even the State Capitol building! I have an obsession with makeup and to me, it is something I would still do every day even if I wasn’t getting paid. I have a very calm and professional demeanor, because I’ve been doing this so long that nothing surprises me anymore! Aside from bridal, I work on a lot of commercials, music videos, and print work.
Where do you find inspiration? Nature; sometimes the prettiest color and texture combinations come to me while taking a stroll through a park.
What trend do you see coming for weddings this year? Simplicity while still remaining classy. For makeup I see bold lip colors making more of an appearance this year.

What professional organizations are you a member of? The Powder Group and National Association of Professional Women
Can you share a funny/embarrassing/touching story about one of your clients? One of my good friends was a bridesmaid in a wedding, and while I was doing her eye makeup (her eyes were closed) and I told her to open (her eyes) and instead she opened her mouth and kept her eyes closed. I had to stop what I was doing because I was laughing so hard.
What’s your favorite comment/compliment that one of your clients has given you? That if they had a nickel for every compliment they received they would have paid off their mortgage by now.
What’s your favorite local restaurant? Mother! I have been vegetarian for over 5 years now.
What’s your favorite local charity? Alchemist Community Development Corporation. I volunteer with them when I can. We set up at the local farmer’s markets and trade EBT benefits for vouchers that they can use to buy fresh farmer’s market food.
What is your favorite fun thing to do locally? Drink a good beer on a porch of any of Sacramento’s wonderful restaurants. And of course shop at some of the cutest boutiques like Krazy Mary’s or Heart!
Do you have secret vice or indulgence? What is it? Velveeta Shells and Cheese. I know, I know. I add broccoli to it though to make it about 2% less awful for me.
Do you have any hidden talents? I’m really good at guessing the exact size of Tupperware to use when putting away food.
If you weren’t in the business that you are in now, what other business/profession would you have liked to have done? I would probably own an animal sanctuary.
If you were to plan your own wedding, or re-do your wedding, what element(s) would be most important to you? I always said if I got married again, even if it was at the courthouse, I would fly up my friend in LA who is a makeup artist and hairstylist to make me look awesome on my wedding day.
What advice would you can give to brides and grooms getting married today? Follow a timeline, have fun, and make sure you get a great photographer, makeup artist, and hair stylist! Pinterest, YouTube, and Instagram might not have the best beauty advice, so you’re better off trusting your beauty to a seasoned professional. And for the men — get a good hair cut, a facial, and wear sunscreen.
Anything else you’d like to share with Real Weddings Magazine’s readers? I also offer lash extensions at my salon in Midtown Sacramento and offer a discount to my brides!
